In a 2015 website you can't assume how users are accessing your site. First impressions are everything. They could be using a desktop computer, a tablet, a mobile phone, or even a television – in tandem – all within a few hours! A Google study found that 90% of people do move between their devices to accomplish a task. If you are considering re-designing your site, or have been looking for ways to increase interaction and conversion, responsive is the way to go.

In the field of Website design, we’re getting to the point of being unable to keep up with the endless new devices and resolutions. For most websites, creating a version for each resolution and new device would be practically impossible, or at the least impractical. Should we just risk losing visitors from one device, for the benefit of gaining visitors from another?

Or is there another option? Responsive Website design is an approach that suggests that design should respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. As the user switches from their laptop to iPad, the website should automatically switch to accommodate for resolution, image size and scripting abilities. In other words, the website should have the technology to automatically respond to the user’s preferences. This would eliminate the need for a different design for each new gadget that arrives on the market. All smarter websites are responsive.
